The Engineering Undergraduate Students society prepared and is circulating the following petition. As suggested by another (non-Engineering) student, I'm making the petition available electronically for others from McGill who would like to add their names to this effort. I've indicated in parentheses the original Engineering student-centric wording.
McGill University prides itself on being a globally recognized institution of academic excellence with a 200 year tradition of advancement of knowledge and education. We as students have certain rights which the university is obligated to safeguard.
Article 9 of the Charter of Student's Rights states that:
"Every student has a right to a quality education. The University's corresponding obligation is fulfilled where:
- the University offers an education capable of providing students with an adequate level of competence in the relevant field of study, and
- the University makes every reasonable effort to maintain the quality of education it dispenses, and
- the University makes every reasonable effort to provide an appropriate environment for learning and assessment activities."
The recent controversy related to the academic integrity policy of McGill University brings into disrepute McGill's hard earned reputation as well as demeans the stature of our degrees. It infringes upon our right to quality education and therefore should be addressed on a priority basis.
We the undersigned, (originally "students of the Engineering Undergraduate Society"), petition that the University:
